DHL Shipping from Salado, Texas
An international sale combines the two hardest shipping problems: a fragile piece, and a customs form that has to describe it correctly.
How do Salado galleries ship artwork internationally?
Through Pack N Mail in Temple, roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes north on I-35, where DHL international shipments are accepted, fragile pieces are packed on site, and the customs declaration is completed with you. For artwork crossing a border, the packing and the paperwork both have to be right — one protects the piece, the other determines whether it arrives at all.

Artwork across borders
Describing a handmade piece to a customs officer.
Artwork is harder to declare than ordinary goods because it is not a standard product. A specific, plain description does the work: what it is, what it is made from, and what the buyer paid. “Original ceramic vessel, stoneware, $340” is clear. “Art” is not.
Some countries treat original artwork differently from manufactured goods for duty purposes, and some apply additional rules to antiques or to particular materials. Any piece incorporating natural materials — certain woods, shell, bone, feathers — can run into restrictions that have nothing to do with its value. Those are worth checking before a sale is agreed, not after it is packed.
Then the physical side. International routing means more handling and air transport, so the packing standard is higher than for a domestic shipment, not lower. Double-boxing is the baseline for anything breakable going abroad.
- Describe the medium and the material‘Stoneware vessel’ rather than ‘art’. Specific clears faster.
- Check natural materials before sellingCertain woods, shell and bone face restrictions unrelated to value.
- Double-box for international, alwaysMore handling, more transfers, higher standard required.
- Declare the actual sale priceUnderstating it creates a problem for your buyer, not for you.
Compared before it leaves
DHL is one of four carriers at the counter and the usual first choice for art going abroad. For lighter pieces with no deadline, postal international is worth pricing too. DHL is international only here — there is no domestic DHL service at this counter.
Destination decides more than anything else here, so the quote comes after the address, not before it.
