Shipping Options for Every Kind of Package

Ground, expedited, overnight, international, fragile, oversized. Here is what actually separates them, so you can walk into Pack N Mail knowing roughly what you are choosing between.

What decides your shipping options?

Four things set the price and the shortlist: how much the package weighs, how big the box is, where it is going, and the day it needs to arrive. Everything else — carrier, service name, add-ons — follows from those four. Bring them with you and a quote takes a couple of minutes.

Weight

The single biggest lever on price. Carriers round up, so a box at 5 lb 2 oz is billed as 6 lb.

Dimensions

A big, light box can cost more than a small, heavy one. See dimensional weight below.

Destination

Distance, and whether the address is residential, rural, or international, all move the number.

Date needed

“Soon” and “by Thursday” are different orders. The second one narrows the list fast.

The thing that surprises people

Why a light box can cost like a heavy one.

Carriers charge for the space a package takes up on a truck or a plane as well as what it weighs. When a box is large but light — think a lampshade, a pillow, a boxed hat — they bill on dimensional weight instead of actual weight.

The practical effect: trimming a box down to the size of what is inside can cut the price, while padding an oversized carton with air raises it. If an item is sitting in a carton twice the size it needs, that is usually the first thing worth fixing at the counter.

Each carrier applies its own dimensional-weight formula, and the thresholds change from service to service, so the real figure comes from measuring your actual box.

Costs more than it should

  • An oversized carton half-filled with packing paper
  • A long, narrow box that exceeds a length limit
  • A heavy item in a box too weak to stack, needing extra handling
  • An unlabeled, unsealed box repacked at the counter

Speed and cost

Ground, expedited, or overnight?

Every carrier names its services differently, but they all fall into roughly three tiers. Pick the tier first, then the carrier.

Comparison of economy, expedited and overnight shipping tiers
Tier Typically used for Trade-off Carriers to look at
Economy / Ground Everyday boxes with no deadline — returns, gifts sent early, household items, seller shipments Lowest cost, longest and least precise transit window USPS, UPS, FedEx
Expedited Packages that need to arrive in a couple of days but not tomorrow Noticeably faster than ground, well under overnight pricing USPS, UPS, FedEx
Overnight / Next-day Contracts, medical and legal documents, replacement parts, anything with a hard date Highest cost, tightest commitment, earliest drop-off cutoff UPS, FedEx, USPS

Available services and delivery windows vary by destination and by day. Carrier collections run 4:30–5:30 PM on weekdays and 1:30–2:30 PM on Saturdays, and only USPS, UPS and Vinted Go collect on a Saturday. This table is a general orientation, not a quote or a delivery commitment.

Within the United States

Domestic shipping

For packages staying inside the U.S., all four carriers are on the table and the choice usually comes down to weight. Light parcels tend to favor USPS; once a box gets heavy, the ground networks at UPS and FedEx often take over.

  • Flat-rate boxesWhen something is small and dense, a fixed-price box can beat weight-based pricing outright.
  • Residential vs commercialSome services price a house differently from a business address. It is worth knowing which one you are sending to.
  • PO Box destinationsIf the recipient only has a PO Box, that decides the carrier for you.
  • Declared valueCarriers include a base level of coverage and sell more. For anything valuable, decide this before the label prints.

Leaving the country

International shipping

International packages need a customs declaration listing what is inside, what it is worth, and what it is made of. An accurate, specific description is the single best way to avoid a package sitting in customs.

  • Describe contents precisely“Cotton t-shirts, 2” clears customs. “Gift” or “clothes” invites questions.
  • Duties and taxesThe destination country may charge the recipient on arrival. Worth warning them in advance.
  • Restricted items vary by countryBatteries, liquids, aerosols, perishables, and some foods are limited or barred depending on the destination. Ask before packing.
  • Full recipient detailsInternational addresses need a postal code and a working phone number for the recipient, or delivery stalls.

DHL is built around cross-border shipping, but USPS, UPS, and FedEx all run international services too — which one fits depends on the destination.

Particular packages

When the item itself changes the answer.

Fragile items

Glass, ceramics, framed pieces, instruments, electronics. What protects them is two inches of cushioning on every side and an inner item that cannot shift — not a sticker on the outside of the box. Bring it unpacked if you are unsure; packing it properly is part of what the counter does.

Large and heavy packages

Standard parcel service has weight and size ceilings — around 70 lb for several common services, with length and girth limits alongside. Past those, the shipment moves into freight territory, which is a different process with different pricing. Bring dimensions and weight and we will tell you which side of the line you are on.

Gifts

Gifts carry a date, so start from the arrival day and work backward. Shipping a week early on ground service is almost always cheaper than shipping two days out on expedited. Around holidays, carrier networks run full and the gap widens.

Documents

Light and cheap to move, which means the decision is about proof rather than price: tracking detail, delivery confirmation, and whether a signature is required at the other end.

Online seller and business shipments

When you ship the same kinds of boxes week after week, small per-package differences compound. It is worth settling on a default service for your typical box and only deviating when a shipment is unusual.

Last-minute shipments

Carriers collect between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM on weekdays and between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM on Saturdays. A package handed over after its carrier has been is accepted the same day but travels the next business day, so arriving earlier genuinely buys you options.

Already have a label

Prepaid drop-offs

If your package already has a prepaid shipping label on it, you can leave it with us. Prepaid drop-offs are accepted for all four carriers — USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL — and for Vinted Go. There is nothing to book and nothing to pay at the counter.

This is the common case for anyone selling online, returning something to a retailer, or sending an item back under a warranty. The seller or the marketplace generates the label, you print it, and the only thing left is getting the package into the carrier’s hands.

It is also the quickest visit you can make here. Nothing needs weighing, because the postage is already paid and the label already carries the service.

Timing still matters. A prepaid package handed over after its carrier has collected for the day travels the next business day — collections run 4:30–5:30 PM on weekdays, and 1:30–2:30 PM on Saturdays for USPS, UPS and Vinted Go only.

  • Make sure the label is attachedSecurely, flat, and with no older labels or barcodes left visible on the box.
  • Check it is the right carrier’s labelA package goes out with whichever carrier the label names.
  • Seal it properlyIf the box needs taping or reinforcing, that can be handled at the counter.
  • Ask for a drop-off receiptWorth having for a return or a marketplace sale, as proof you handed it over.

Be ready

Bring these and it goes quickly.

None of this is required — you can walk in with just the item. It simply shortens the visit.

  • The item itselfPacked or not. Unpacked is fine, and sometimes better.
  • The full delivery addressStreet, city, state, ZIP or postal code — and the recipient’s phone number.
  • The date it needs to arriveNot “soon.” An actual day, if there is one.
  • What it is worthFor coverage, and for the customs form if it is leaving the country.
  • Contents, in plain wordsRequired for international shipments; useful for everything else.
  • A prepaid label, if you already have oneAlready-labelled packages can simply be dropped off.
